THE public is having “doubts and hesitations” about electing the Tories, Ken Clarke admitted.
The business spokesman raised the possibility of a shock election result, despite the Tories’ big poll lead.
Mr Clarke pinned the blame for the economic crash – the “longest and deepest of my lifetime” – firmly on the Prime Minister's mismanagement.
He also insisted Margaret Thatcher bore no responsibility for the 1980s recession that laid waste to Merseyside's industrial base, which was caused by the “mess” left by Labour. Mr Clarke said: “What we've got to get across is to make sure blame is attached to those who were responsible for Britain suffering worse than most - and, over 12 years, Brown contributed a lot to our position being worse.”
