Liverpool Wavertree MP candidate Luciana Berger dismisses third election crisis

POLITICAL hopeful Luciana Berger last night vowed to forge ahead with her election bid after being engulfed by the second crisis to hit her campaign in a week.

Ms Berger was selected as Labour’s candidate to fight to keep Liverpool’s Wavertree constituency last Sunday.

But since then she has been rocked by criticism and alleged scandal.

In the latest wave, a Sunday newspaper yesterday claimed Labour factions are furious at how Ms Berger was chosen to run in Wavertree.

They are reportedly protesting over how the 28-year-old former student politician was allowed to stay at the home of current Wavertree MP Jane Kennedy during the selection ballot.

Ms Berger allegedly spent a month at the home of Mrs Kennedy, which she shares with her partner, Peter Downing.

But it was Mr Downing who, as constituency secretary, ran the selection process and received completed ballot papers at his home address.

All the individuals strenuously deny any wrongdoing and the Labour Party said it had received no formal complaints.

Ms Berger saw off two challengers in the selection process: Liverpool city councillor Wendy Simon and Joyce Still.

Last night she said: “I understand in no uncertain terms that no formal complaint has been received.

“I’m not allowed to comment on the process. The decision has been made by the members, it’s one member one vote. Everyone’s delighted and I look forward to working with everyone.”
