Vince Cable makes “good” predictions for Liberal Democrats in Liverpool

LIBERAL Democrat treasury spokesman Vince Cable has predicted the party is in a position to make "significant gains" in the north of England in the coming General Election.

Cable, in Liverpool on Saturday for a fund- raiser for the party's Wavertree candidate, Colin Eldridge, said a mixture of "good management and good luck" meant the party's prospects were good.

Around 200 of the party faithful turned out to hear him speak at the Liner Hotel, in Liverpool city centre, where he delivered a sombre message on the economy.

"We are going into a decade that perhaps is going to be very difficult . . . we are not going back to this boom period that led up to the crisis. For that reason, people have to feel a sense of fairness."

He said that meant the income tax threshold should be raised to £10,000 to take the poorest out of paying tax.
