Fazakerley Hospital slashes carbon footprint

A MERSEYSIDE hospital is slashing its carbon footprint in a £3.6m project.

The Combined Heat and Power (CHP) unit at Fazakerley Hospital is helping create a cleaner environment while saving taxpayers an estimated £500,000 a year in fuel costs.

Annual CO² emissions will be reduced by around 1,600 tonnes – the equivalent of a family car driven for 7m miles or 280 times around the world.

Around 75% of the funding came from the Department of Health’s £100m Energy Efficiency Fund, with the remainder paid for by the hospital.

It should pay for itself within six years.

James Birrell, the Trust’s chief executive, said: “The new green power unit is part of a wider package of sustainability initiatives and makes sense on many levels – it will greatly further reduce our carbon emissions, as well as contributing to our national carbon reduction target and help to control energy costs.”
