Thousands of bikers expected for Wirral Egg Run

Wirral Egg Run

THOUSANDS of bikers are again expected to descend on Wirral to raise money for poorly children in the 30th annual Egg Run.

The massive charity event, held ahead of Easter, has become an institution raising tens of thousands of pounds over the years.

Starting from New Brighton, the motorcyclists follow a route to Clatterbridge where traditionally they have handed over eggs and toys for sick children.

Many riders don fancy dress for the event, which has itself become a registered charity and now raises cash for charities involved with children.

Last year the Egg Run raised £26,000.

Graham Heron, spokesman for the organising committee, said: “We’re trying to allow the Egg Run to grow a bit more, especially since the Wirral Show said it was not going ahead.

“Last year we had an estimated 8-10,000 and we’re hoping for at least the same again this year – the more people we have, the more money it makes for charity.”

He said that, of the £26,000 raised in 2009, around £20,000 was released through grants to charities helping sick children and the remainder would be rolled over to whatever is raised this year.

Mr Heron added: “It’s all about raising money for sick children and we hope to keep going and going.”
