Motorists’ anger over icy sliproads near Wallasey tunnel

MERSEYTRAVEL said it is investigating after two collisions on an icy sliproad leaving the Wallasey tunnel yesterday.

Drivers described chaotic scenes following the crashes at around 7.30am, and the south sliproad of the Kingsway tunnel was shut and traffic diverted.

A spokesman for Merseytravel said roads are gritted by Enterprise, who are in partnership with Liverpool Council.

He said: “They gritted the road just after 9pm on Tuesday, but unfortunately there were two incidents on Wednesday. We are investigating the circumstances.”

A Liverpool Council spokesman said: “We will have to look at what happened, in view of the claims made.”

But one motorist said: “It is unbelievably incompetent for the tunnel management to close a slip road when they have only four slips to keep clear of ice. What do they spend the tunnel tolls on?”
