Call for teacher training shake-up

A GROUP of MPs today called for the bar to be raised on the qualifications needed to become a teacher, amid concerns the current requirements are too low.

It is of “great concern” that students with no A-levels or only a pass at degree can be offered a place of a teacher training programme, the Commons schools select committee said.

Only those with at least a 2.2 degree should be able to win a place on a post-graduate teaching course and this requirement should gradually be raised to allow only those with an upper second 2.1 or above to apply, the committee said.

In a report, the MPs called for a radical shake-up of teacher training, arguing that entry requirements, particularly for people wanting to train on undergraduate courses as secondary school teachers, are too low.
