Everton player Steven Pienaar charged with drink driving

EVERTON FC midfielder Steven Pienaar faces a court hearing after being charged with drink-driving.

The player was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning, at the junction of London Road and Lime Street, in Liverpool city centre.

He was charged with drink-driving, as well as failing to comply with a traffic signal. He will appear before Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on March 9.

A force spokesman said today: “Merseyside Police can confirm that a 27-year-old man has been charged with drink-driving and failure to comply with a traffic sign.”

“Steven Pienaar, from Woolton, will appear at Liverpool City Magistrates Court on March 9.”

Meanwhile, former Liverpool star Dietmar Hamann has been banned for 16 months for drink-driving.

Hamann, 36, was stopped by police on the M56 at 12.15am on July 12 last year.

He was so drunk at the wheel of his Range Rover that he clipped the motorway kerb three times, Trafford Magistrates’ Court heard.
