Historic 1950s tilework from Lewis’s must be preserved

HISTORIC 1950s tilework, which once decorated Lewis’s cafeteria in Liverpool, must be preserved as the building is redeveloped.

The news emerged as a new exhibition of pictures, by photographer Stepehn King, and memories of the long-closed fifth floor at the store, which is preparing to shut its doors for good, opened at the Conservation Centre, in Whitechapel.

The 65m hand-painted mural made up of ceramic tiles has been hidden for nearly 30 years, but now it has been recognised as a masterpiece of British design from the early 1950s.
