History awakes at Liverpool's Speke Hall

VISITORS to Speke Hall were given an insight into preparations to ready the Tudor manor house for the summer season – with the chance to pick up a few tips for their own homes.

Waking Up the Hall is a series of demonstrations by the Hall’s conservation team on how they go about re-opening Speke Hall after its winter closure.

The hall’s Victorian Housekeeper’s Box was opened and members of the team have been giving talks on the care of metals, ceramics and furniture. This year, visitors will also be able to use cards which help them to focus on the “top three to see” items in key rooms such as the tapestry bedroom, kitchen, scullery, and billiard room – each with quirky stories behind them.

Anne Inskip, Speke’s event co-ordinator, said: “We worked with volunteers to choose the objects, a research group to gather the stories and a test group to make sure what we put together would be as interesting as possible.”

The Hall is open weekends to March 14, then Wednesday to Sunday between March 17 and October 31.
