Bars ban for south Liverpool night spots

A LANDMARK decision to stop any more bars opening on two busy suburban south Liverpool streets was approved last night.

Liverpool city council last night approved a recommendation from its licensing committee that no further licences be granted on Allerton Road, Mossley Hill, and Lark Lane, in Aigburth, south Liverpool.

It represents a landmark decision and will be, according to town hall bosses, the first such bar ban in the UK.

Known as the “cumulative impact policy”, applications for new bars can still be submitted, but it is now very unlikely they will be approved.

Cllr Erica Kemp, ward member for Allerton’s Church ward, said: “I am absolutely delighted with this decision. The residents will be really pleased because they now have further ammunition.

“There has to be the right balance of wine bars to other retail outlets.

“We need to encourage more small retailers, so that the day- time economy thrives like the night-time economy.”
