Hundreds of panels to be checked for cracks at Liverpool's Alexandra Tower

HUNDREDS of decorative glass panels at a luxury waterfront apartment block must be safety checked after one crashed 70 feet to the ground.

The managing agents of the Alexandra Tower building, in Princes Parade, were last night ordered to undertake the task after a 100kg glass sheet shattered.

The shards were strewn across a 30 feet area as they hit the ground.

Fortunately, no-one was injured in the incident on Monday afternoon.

Agents Thomson and Moulton were issued with a Section 77 notice by Liverpool City Council last night.

A council spokesman said: “Our building control team have removed the broken panel and have asked the management company to survey the rest of them as a matter of urgency and report back to us on their findings.”

A specialist cladding company will now be used to assess all of the waterfront building’s glass panels.

Each panel, the spaces between them and the stainless steel bolts which hold the panels in will all be checked as part of the review.

Tudor Roberts, spokesman for managing agents Thomson and Moulton, said: “Everything is under control now.

“We have had to remove the defective panel using a bucket which holds three men.

“The bucket is on top of the building and comes down.

“We took the broken panel out by putting a pole through it.

“And the rest of the panel then fell to the ground.

“We had the bottom of the building screened and everyone was standing way back when the rest of the panel came off.
