Hundreds of panels to be checked for cracks at Liverpool's Alexandra Tower

“We have been working with the fire authority and the local authority and they are happy with the situation.

“The team that carried out the removal of the remaining glass was fantastic and dealt with the situation very quickly.”

The managing agents have now ordered a replacement glass panel from Austria to fill the space.

The item will be fitted either by local agents or the Austrian company itself.

It is still not clear what caused the panel to crack.

But it is believed that the sheet may have shattered after the sharp change from freezing temperatures to sunny weather on Monday.

Firefighters and police made the area safe by setting up a joint cordon so that no one could access the area.

The emergency services then waited for the team to come and remove what was left of the panel.

Mr Tudor added: “We think what caused the panel to crack was an environmental thing.

“The glass went ping after the weather changed from cold to hot. We think that it was just a one off and we are talking with the experts about it.” He added: “The panel that came off is just a decorative panel.

“Behind it was concrete, which was not affected.

“People are still living in the building and they never had any disruption.”

The agents carried out an inspection of some panels and there were no “nasty cracks”.

However, the comprehensive survey will check to ensure there are no unknown faults and cracks with the decorative panels.

Mr Roberts added: “The delayed inspection may find more. Hundreds of panels will be checked.

“It’s a 100%job. It could take a week to do.”
