Liverpool tea party toasted William Gladstone’s 200th birthday

A GLITTERING celebration of William Gladstone’s bicentenial was held at Stanley Park’s Gladstone Conservatory last night.

Around 200 guests turned out for the event, which included a tea dance and Victorian costumes.

The Everton Collection, which is currently on the display at Central Library, was also on show, as were exhibits from the Gladstone Exhibition normally seen at St George’s Hall.

The event was the brainchild of Liverpool City Council’s executive member for tourism, Cllr Gary Millar.

He said: “I am fully aware of the tremendous history in all Liverpool’s neighbourhoods, and how this can be such a driver for leisure and tourism.

“This event has a tea dance theme, but is also about celebrating local history and providing local information. We are also bringing some exhibits from the city centre out to the event, so local people can experience them on their doorstep.”
