He told the committee members that arguments the space was needed for industrial use did not apply as there is 325,000 sq ft of similar vacant space and the particular warehouse had been empty for several years despite being marketed.
He later said he was pleased with the decision after the scheme had also received backing from a number of cricket development bodies including the ECB, Indoor Cricket England, Cheshire Cricket Board and local clubs, as well as Wirral Chamber of Commerce.
Planning committee member Cllr Dave Mitchell had proposed approving the plans, saying he knew the area well as it is close to his Eastham ward, and this was accepted by fellow councillors when it came to the vote.
Cllr John Salter said the scheme would create jobs and a unique sporting facility which would operate all year round, and Cllr Brian Kenny added: “All in all, there is a lot more in favour of this plan than against it.”
