Angry scenes outside Liverpool Crown Court as British National Party and anti-fascist supporters demonstrate outside trial

A DEMONSTRATION took place outside Liverpool Crown Court yesterday ahead of the trial of a well-known British National Party member.

Supporters of the far-right group and anti-fascists converged on Derby Square as Peter Tierney appeared in the dock to face an allegation of assault.

Waving Union flags and shouting slogans through a loudspeaker, the BNP exchanged insults with anti-facist demonstrators, who were holding their own protest.

The groups clashed as Tierney, 52, attended court for the start of a trial following an allegation he assaulted Nicholas Barnett, 30, an anti-facist member, in St John’s Lane, near St George’s Hall, on April 23 last year.

The trial was adjourned to continue today.

Tierney, of High Street, Hale Village, denies the offence.

Police stood guard between the two groups and are expected to remain over the remainder of the week as the trial continues.
