Labour chooses candidate for key Wirral West seat

LABOUR has chosen its prospective parliamentary candidate for the Wirral West constituency to succeed outgoing Stephen Hesford.

Phil Davies, the current deputy leader of the Labour group on Wirral council, will fight the seat after being selected at a count held last night.

Wirral West is one of the key battlegrounds in the general election, which was narrowly held by Labour by 1,000 votes in 2005.

Esther McVey is hoping to win it back for the Conservatives, who lost the seat in the 1997 Labour landslide.

Mr Davies, 50, said he would be fighting on issues such as the economy, schools, the NHS, and reducing crime.

He added: “It’s a great privilege to have been selected by the members of Wirral West and to have been given this chance. I’m proud of the Labour Party’s achievements and will continue to build on Stephen Hesford's hard work.”
