Liverpool’s queen of television Carla Lane back home and ready to start writing once more

Carla Lane

Carla is growing into the new house fast.

She said: “I love it. The garden goes back and back like a little park. I have people at the front and countryside at the back – what more do I want?”

There is none of the feeling which comes with a house only just moved into.

Family heirlooms are in their proper location and there is a stillness which owes a lot to thick Tudor walls and banishes the 21st century to another place.

Now as order returns to her life, Carla can get back to her writing.

She describes her current project as the autobiography of her animal sanctuary, as opposed to her account of her screenwriting career.

She has finished the first draft in longhand and is about to dictate it to a typist so it can be sent off to her publisher.

Carla said: “I’m a stupid writer. I am good with words but I cannot manage machinery. I have never typed in my life.”

In the longer run, she would like to get back to television writing once again, although she has not had a major series for a few years.

She said: “I do not know whether people in television will even remember me now.

“I was like the queen of television at one time. We all had our turn, but it is mostly reality TV now.

“I used to relish making up gentle, funny comedies about people. I do not know if they want that any more, but I can write. It does not matter what they want – I will have a go.”
