Edge Hill students launch Facebook campaign to save journalism course

MORE than 200 people have signed up to a Facebook site in protest at a university’s decision to scrap its journalism course.

Edge Hill university, in Ormskirk, has confirmed it will be no longer accepting students onto its National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) accredited journalism degree course from September.

The university last night would not be drawn on why it was pulling the plug on the course, but insisted the decision has “no impact” on existing students, who will receive the same quality of provision until they graduate in either 2011 or 2012.

But students furious about the course being axed have now set up Facebook group “Save Edge Hill Journalism” in a bid to save the course.

They are concerned existing students will not receive the same standard of provision.

But Dr Nigel Simons, dean of the faculty of arts and sciences, insisted students will continue to receive a “high-quality programme”.
