Liverpool ‘photomission’ to promote city’s pavilion at Shangai expo

PHOTOGRAPHS of Liverpool taken by members of the public will be used to promote the city at the international expo in Shanghai later this year.

One hundred snapshots of the city will be part of a video feature in the Liverpool Pavilion at the World Expo in Shanghai beginning on May 1.

The images, featuring beautiful, humorous, and quirky images of the city and its people were taken by 10 amateur photographers over a 10-day period as part of the My Liverpool project, a “photo mission” sponsored by English Heritage which will be translated into Mandarin

The photographers, chosen by a competition, were fed single word themes each day of the project to inspire their images.

Stacey Hughes captured a woman walking through Liverpool One in curlers for her “Saturday afternoon” theme.

Eilish Culley took a photo of sand dunes in Birkdale to represent “stillness”, and Emma Limbert’s “evening” themed shot was of a sandstone building in Liverpool.

Frances Lee chose to represent “Morning” with her photograph of tea and a Daily Post in a Costa coffee shop in Heswall.

Sharon Matthews, 44, from Mossley Hill was one of the people approached to take part in the photo mission.

She said: “I saw something on a creative website asking for submissions and I sent a photo in taken from inside Lime Street Station as it’s the gateway to the city.

“Then I got a message to say I had been accepted as one of the 10 photographers.

“On my photo missions I wanted to show the bits of the city that aren’t the tourist spots or the famous buildings.

“I was taking pictures of the bins, the drainpipes.

“When the theme was Saturday night, I wanted to take a picture of these three girls getting into a taxi on Allerton Road.

“Liverpool girls are well know for getting dressed up to the nines.

“I asked permission and just asked them to act natural but they couldn’t help posing.

“That’s what Liverpool girls are all about and I thought it summed up Liverpool very well.”

Sharon, who works at Liverpool Community College, added: “It’s special to think of all those people looking at your photos.

“I hope they’re pleasantly surprised at them. I’d like to show Liverpool off as it really is.”
