The Liverpool Pavilion will be housed within the Urban Best Practice Area of the 5.3 sq km Expo site which overlooks the Huangpu River and is the only one to represent an English city at the six-month expo.
It is designed to put a spotlight on the city’s assets and strengths for the 70 million visitors expected to attend the event.
The Expo, hosted by Liverpool’s twin city, is regarded as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to strengthen existing and create new relationships in the world’s emerging markets and is predicted to deliver up to £50m in economic benefits to Liverpool and the North West by 2020.
The North West Development Agency (NWDA) is supporting Liverpool’s presence there to the tune of £1.25m, whilst Liverpool City Council has committed £300,000.
Its main sponsor is Peel Holdings, which owns John Lennon Airport and is the company behind the ambitious Wirral and Liverpool Water plans.
Louise O’Brien, a programme manager with English Heritage in Liverpool, said the photo mission was a means of getting people to engage with heritage.
She said: “Heritage is about far more than historic buildings; it is about the fabric of our communities and about the essence of the towns and cities in which we live.
“We wanted people to look at the city through fresh eyes and to come up with images which capture the concept of “My Liverpool” to give Pavilion visitors an affectionate impression of what Liverpool is really like.”
