University funding
Edge Hill University, in Ormskirk, enjoyed a 2.6% before-inflation rise, meaning its overall allocation was £25.8m.
Although anticipating “further challenges” in subsequent spending reviews, Vice-Chancellor John Cater was delighted at the increase, one of the 10 highest among English universities.
He said: “As a consequence of this, in 2010-11 the university will educate a record number of students, though public funding per student will be reduced.”
Liverpool Hope University will receive just over £17.4m. It represents a 2.1% rise, but after inflation will be just above last year’s funding level.
A spokesman said the increase was “welcome”, but the funding would only represent less than half of the university’s income.
He added: “Our other income streams will keep Hope buoyant. The times are difficult for all universities but Hope is in good heart and will weather these storms.”
