Intrepid fundraisers step off Liverpool's Royal Hospital roof

ABOUT 200 fundraisers stepped off the roof of the Royal Liverpool Hospital to whizz 1,000 feet through the air in aid of two local charities.

Aged from 13 to 80 they were taking part in the “Big Zip” in aid of the Linda McCartney Centre and the St Paul’s Eye Appeal.

They raised an estimated £23,000 after reaching speeds of up to 30 mph. The oldest participant was Josie Aston, from Birkenhead who took the plunge to mark her 80th birthday.

Professor Simon Harding, chairman of the Foundation for the Prevention of Blindness, also took part and said: “It has been a great event, not just for the fundraising but for bringing in local people.”
