Liverpool night spot The Office closed for a month after catalogue of violence

A CITY pub described by police as “rotten to the core” has avoided having its licence revoked, but must remain closed for a month.

A strict set of conditions have been placed on The Office after a catalogue of violence at the Concert Square venue was revealed.

Merseyside-based Combined Security Services (CSS) must be removed as the company providing door staff.

And the designated premises supervisor, Gary McGovern, must also be removed before the bar can re-open in 28 days.

The pub must also introduce Challenge 21 – where those who appear below 21 are asked to provide ID to prove their age. The conditions were imposed by Liverpool council’s licensing committee yesterday.

“The Office has had its premise licence suspended for 28 days. This is to allow it to investigate the ways in which the licence operates,” said a council spokesman.

Mr McGovern declined to comment, while CSS did not respond to requests for a comment.

The type of violent brawling which put the nightspot under the spotlight was revealed on Saturday.

It followed the start of the hearing on Friday which concluded yesterday. Last week, police referred to up to 40 incidents.
