New Whiston Hospital A&E to open

THE new Whiston Hospital’s A&E department opens tomorrow at 8am.

The transfer of services from the current site will take place through the night, and, although the current unit on Stoney Lane will remain open, bosses are asking patients to consider other options while the transfer takes place.

These include contacting your on-call GP or out-of- hours service, contacting NHS Direct or using A&E services at The Royal Liverpool, Warrington, Aintree, Southport, Ormskirk and Wigan hospitals.

After 8am, all patients attending Accident & Emergency must use the new unit, which is accessed via Dragon Lane.

Hospital bosses say the new unit provides greater capacity to care for increasing numbers of patients.

It has a purpose built resuscitation room, an increased number of treatment areas, hi-tech equipment and 24-hour on-site security.

The new department includes a separate facility for children within the unit.
