Shadow health secretary visits Wirral hospital

TORY shadow health secretary Andrew Lansley yesterday met with NHS staff at a Wirral hospital threatened by cuts. Last week the Daily Post revealed NHS plans to cut services totalling £38m at Arrowe Park hospital.

Mr Lansley said he believed the cuts were the result of the health service “working to a number and they should instead work around need”. He said Conservative policy is to “protect the NHS budget” and the emphasis should be on what patients, GPs and hospital doctors believe the service requires, although he admitted hospitals would have to deliver efficiency savings under a Conservative government.
