The racing supremo has donated the distinctive colours of his beloved three-time Grand National winner Red Rum to the World Museum.
They will then be displayed at the Museum of Liverpool when it opens in 2011.
The only horse to win the historic race three times, the jumper to be displayed was worn for all three of Red Rum’s victories; by jockey Brian Fletcher in 1973 and 74, and Tommy Stack in 1977.
A maroon woollen jumper, it features a yellow horizontal diamond, which originated from the logo of ‘Rummy’s’ owner Noel le Mare’s company, North West Construction.
The jumper was worn for all the races from 1973, including the years ’75 and ’76 when Red Rum came second in the Grand National.
Buried at the finishing post on Aintree Racecourse, Red Rum was famously trained by Ginger McCain on the sands of Southport, being treated to a therapeutic swim in the sea before every Grand National.
Ginger and his wife, Beryl, have loaned the jockey’s colours to National Museums Liverpool indefinitely.
Speaking at the World Museum after going to inspect their new home, Ginger McCain said: “The colours had been sat in a draw at home wrapped in tissue paper.
“I opened the draw a while back and thought it was a shame for them to be sitting there when they could be on display for all to see.
“We have given it on indefinite loan, as I couldn't bear to see them back in a drawer. They had been in the museum at the racecourse but that is only open a few days a year, so this is perfect.
“It will be great to see it in the new museum when it opens, too.
