Could parking charges pay for Sefton Park roads upgrade?

PAY and display parking around Sefton Park could be introduced to help pay to repair its perimeter road.

Council officials have made the suggestion as the local authority ponders how to deal with the city’s 41 miles of unadopted roads – those not of high enough quality to be part of the highway network.

The city could also consider introducing a levy on events at Sefton Park to help pay for the upgrade of the perimeter road, half of which is unadopted.

At the moment, they are only among ideas as the council investigates the issue.

The council is also looking at adding the word “unadopted” on street name plates to make pedestrians and motorists aware they are entering a road which may be of a poor standard.

The subject of unadopted roads will be discussed at the council’s regeneration select committee tomorrow.

Committee chairman Cllr Eddie Clein said the report was likely to be sent to the Local Government Association to lobby the next Government for a national scheme to bring unadopted roads up to a standard where they can be adopted.

He said: “I am not in favour of pay and display parking around Sefton Park, you might as well charge people for going into the park.”
