Plaque to honour Lewis’s founder
THE founder of Lewis’s department store is now commemorated by a plaque in his honour.
David Lewis arrived in Liverpool during 1839, aged 16, and served his apprenticeship with a firm of tailors before going on to found the famous department store which bears his name.
The unveiling was made all the more poignant as the landmark Ranelagh Street store will soon be closing as part of an extensive redevelopment.
The plaque was organised by Arnold Lewis, chairman of the Liverpool Jewish Historical Society, with the unveiling performed by Mark Brunel Cohen, a descendant of the founder.
A spokesperson for Lewis’s said: “Although the dedication of a plaque for our founder David Lewis has occurred at such a sad time in the history of the store, we feel it is a fitting testament to him and the generations of staff who have served the people of Liverpool for over 154 years.”
