A MAJOR inquiry was today demanded after a mentally-ill man was held on suspicion of killing his mother – six years after he killed his father.
Paranoid schizophrenic Leslie Gadsby remained in custody last night after the body of his mother Edna, 70, was discovered at his flat.
Six years ago, the 38-year-old killed his father Arthur, 63, during a frenzied attack with a claw hammer at their home in Gateacre.
His mother also suffered a fractured skull in the same incident when her son went on the rampage in February, 2004.
Now, politicians asked why the previous killer, who was sectioned under the Mental Health Act, was allowed back into the community with such apparent freedom.
Pressure was mounting on Merseycare, the health organisation responsible for the county’s mental patients, to explain how Gadsby was monitored.
Merseyside politicians last night questioned why sufficient safeguards appeared not to have been in place to monitor the former taxi driver.
And they demanded a swift review to find out if the procedures designed to look after Gadsby had failed.
Bob Wareing, MP for West Derby, said: “It’s a dreadful tragedy, but I thought he’d have been much more closely supervised.
“I would encourage the authorities to look at this case and investigate what happened since 2004. I can’t imagine he’d be allowed such freedom, particularly after being sectioned and with obvious mental health problems.
“This case leaves me cold.”
