Halewood soldier killed in Afghanistan honoured at church service
A MOVING church service was held to honour a Merseyside soldier who was killed while on active service in Afghanistan.
Corporal Simon Hornby, of the 2nd Battalion Duke of Lancaster Regiment, was on patrol when he was killed by an explosive device on December 19 last year.
The memorial service took place at St Nicholas’s Church, Halewood, yesterday with dignitaries and military personnel, including soldiers he served with in Iraq and Afghanistan, turning out to show their respect.
Cpl Hornby’s name has been added to the war memorial in the churchyard, the first since it was originally erected.
Halewood residents Tony Lucock and Ron Sinclair spent months collecting funds for the engraving.
The 29-year-old’s father, Joe Hornby, said: “It was a fantastic service.
