Skelmersdale tenant ‘stabbed landlord then bought alcohol with blood-stained money’, court hears

A POLISH man being chased for £600 rent money stabbed his landlord 83 times and then went off to buy alcohol with bloodstained bank notes, a court heard.

Michal Kalinowski, 22, allegedly murdered Peter Berkley, 43, because he “resented considerably” being pursued for the rent arrears, Preston Crown Court heard yesterday.

He stabbed his landlord with such force that one knife wound penetrated his victim’s skull, the jury was told.

Kalinowski continued the attack until his victim stopped breathing and then went off to Asda to buy alcohol, it is alleged.

The defendant denies murder on November 6 last year at the flat he rented from Mr Berkley in Skelmersdale, Lancashire.

Charles Brown, opening the case for the prosecution, told the jury: “Peter Berkley sustained 83 separate stab wounds, he died from multiple stab wounds.

“One of these was delivered with sufficient force to penetrate his skull.

“After Peter Berkley had been killed – and the defendant accepts he continued his attack until he stopped breathing – Mr Kalinowski took from Mr Berkley the £200 he had paid earlier that evening.

“Following the attack, he did his best to clean up the flat.
