A LIVERPOOL hospital may cut 20 beds on one of its wards.
The changes could be made at Broadgreen Hospital’s orthopaedic unit.
Nurses could be transferred to Broadgreen’s sister hospital, the Royal, because it is busier and deals with a greater number of trauma patients.
A spokeswoman said: “A review is being carried out to see how we will best use these beds in the future.
“Many operations and treatments that used to involve long stays in hospital can now be performed as day surgery or only require short stays.
“Our average bed occupancy rates are below 60% on those orthopaedic wards, and there are currently 28 empty beds.”
But some patients have criticised the move, saying the ward should remain protected.
