Liverpool gangster and Sunday league football manager shot dead in West Derby street execution

Nicky Ayers

Much of the violence centred around Sunday league football and led to police standing guard at matches.

The ECHO understands Ayers was involved in a stand-off when the Western played their fierce Croxteth rivals, The Lobster, on the pitches in Scargreen Avenue, Norris Green.

It is believed he and another city gangster went toe-to-toe and pulled guns on each other before the situation was diffused by others.

Ayers was also implicated in the drama that saw a children’s football match called off in Vauxhall in February when shots rang out on a Sunday morning.

It is believed an underworld rival went looking for him with a samurai sword as players from the Western got changed before a game.

Shots were then fired from a Transit van sat in the car park.

The referee on an under-12s game being played on the William Collins playing fields halted his game and took the youngsters off as he feared for their safety.

Any witnesses should call police on 0151 709 6010.
