Election 2010: Fury as Liverpool Wavertree runs out of vote slips

FURIOUS voters today told how they were turned away from city polling stations due to a shortage of ballot papers.

The keenly contested Wavertree constituency was at the centre of the chaotic scenes.

Most people complained about not being able to cast their vote in the local authority election.

But a number said they were denied a vote in the general election too.

Liverpool’s returning officer Colin Hilton last night insisted everyone who wanted to vote in the parliamentary election “had the opportunity to do so”.

He said “an unprecedented and unexpected high turnout” meant a small number of polling stations ran out of ballot papers in the early evening.

Mr Hilton added: “As is normal procedure in these circumstances additional ballot papers were delivered swiftly to these stations.”

But Paul Warburton, 43, a quantity surveyor from Childwall, said he was unable to cast his vote in either election.
