It’s time for new leader, Liverpool Liberal Democrats tell Warren Bradley

But he might stand for election if Cllr Bradley decides to resign.

"My advice to Warren is that he has been under great strain and he needs a break," added Cllr Kemp.

The Lib-Dems had 60 seats when Cllr Bradley took over the leadership four years ago – they now have 37.

Leadership contenders will have until 6pm on Sunday, May 16, to declare their hand – leaving the prospect of a week of behind-the-scenes wrangling if Cllr Bradley decides he wants to lead the party in opposition.

The Lib-Dems will meet on May 17 to either re-elect Cllr Bradley as leader or choose a successor.

Cllr Clein said: "I think he should resign. I feel sorry for Warren because I know that he has worked really, really hard, ceaselessly you might say, in this election.

"But he has presided over the party losing seats, going from 60 to 37."

He said he had no plans to stand for the leadership.
