Southport and Ormskirk cocaine doctor’s registration restricted for seven months

A DOCTOR found in possession of cocaine will have conditions on his registration for the next seven months.

A General Medical Council (GMC) committee decided Gareth Fisher’s fitness to practise remained impaired, following his police caution 2½ years ago.

It also voiced concern Dr Fisher had admitted taking cocaine after he was stopped by officers.

The regulatory body concluded on Friday that nine restrictions should be put in place, including the nomination of a supervisor when he is carrying out medical work.

He must also notify the GMC of any post he accepts and stop work immediately if his medical supervisor advises him do so.

The medic, who still works at Southport and Ormskirk hospitals, was arrested after police stopped him in Liverpool city centre, in December, 2007, and found four wraps of the Class A drug.

He told officers he had gone to town to watch a band and needed that amount “to get the desired effect”.

At a GMC review hearing last month, Dr Fisher had hoped the conditions on his registration would be lifted.

But the panel disagreed, meaning the 29-year-old could have been struck off, suspended or face being monitored by further conditions.
