Parade held in Liverpool to mark 105th anniversary of Norway’s independence

THE 105th anniversary of Norwegian independence was celebrated with a parade through Liverpool city centre yesterday.

The Norwegian Constitution Day Parade started with a short service at the country’s Pier Head war memorial attended by the High Sheriff of Merseyside, Roy Morris.

More than 100 members of the Norwegian community then paraded through Liverpool One to the Scandinavian Church.

Escorted by Merseyside Mounted Police they were accompanied by the Imperial Drums of the Lord Mayor of Liverpool’s Band.

Liz Murphy, from the Norwegian Consulate, said: “This is the annual commemoration of Norway’s independence from Sweden.

“It’s a very important event for Norwegians who can’t get home for this holiday.”
