Arson investigation launched after blaze rips through Birkdale former deaf school
ARSON investigators are preparing to examine the scene of a huge blaze at a former Merseyside school for the deaf.
Police and the fire service confirmed the blaze at the School for Hearing Impaired Children on Lancaster Road, in Birkdale, was being treated as deliberate.
The fire at the Grade II listed building was reported by police officers on patrol at 2.20am yesterday.
Nearby houses were evacuated as a precaution as flames tore through the derelict property. An in-depth investigation will begin once building control experts agree it is safe to enter.
Witnesses should call the police on 0151 777 3165, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
