Workers return to Birkenhead’s Cammell Lairds yard but refuse to rule out further strike action if union talks break down

CAMMELL LAIRD shipyard workers returned to work yesterday, but refused to rule out further strikes.

Employees at the Birkenhead site said they were waiting to meet with union delegates before taking their case to the yard’s managing director, John Syvret.

If the outcome of those talks is unsatisfactory, they will once again consider industrial action in protest over the possible loss of 180 jobs at the shipbuilders.

Bosses and union representatives were locked in meetings all day yesterday to resolve an unofficial strike on Monday.

Last night, a worker at Cammell Laird said: “There will be no walk- out tomorrow.

“But more strikes? You just can’t say at the moment.”

The threat of another walk-out comes as Cammell Laird is poised to start work on the prestigious £44m contract to build parts for the new Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier.

However, the management hope the issues will be sorted out soon.

It branded the action “extremely disappointing”.

Workers at the Birkenhead ship repairers took unofficial strike action after the company announced redundancies.

More than 100 employees walked out at lunchtime on Monday, after being told staff jobs would be lost following the cancellation of a contract.
