Roll of honour for former Liverpool council leaders to be unveiled

EX-LEADERS of Liverpool council are to be commemorated for the first time.

To acknowledge their contribution, a plaque will be unveiled at the town hall listing all leaders of the authority in the 20th century.

The idea was put forward because, while much ceremony surrounds the role of Lord Mayor, there is no formal acknowledgement of the service of council leaders.

A mock-up of the plaque – including the names of the council’s 28 former leaders – was revealed at a lunch given by Lord Mayor Mike Storey for ex-leaders going back to the 1970s.

Sir Trevor Jones, Harry Rimmer, Keva Coombes and Frank Prendergast were among the group, which also included relatives of former leaders who had passed away.

Former Lib-Dem council leader Cllr Warren Bradley did not attend, although it is understood he was invited to the lunch.

Cllr Storey said: “The idea came about because we celebrate Lord Mayors and make a great fuss of them, but actually it’s the political leaders who shape the city, yet nowhere do we recognise them.
