Record crowds for popular Wirral coastal walk
GLORIOUS spring sunshine brought a record-breaking turn-out for the 24th annual Wirral Coastal Walk.
After last year’s wet and windy walk, this year’s weather more than made up for it, with temperatures hovering around the 22°C mark.
An estimated 5,500 participants, some in fancy dress, took part in the 15-mile trek from Seacombe to Thurstaston.
The Wirral Coastal Walk is one of the borough’s biggest fundraising events, and last year 4,500 walkers raised more than £300,000 for good causes.
But organisers are confident they will comfortably beat that total this year, with more than £400,000 expected to be raised for charity.
Walkers choose their own charity, with Unilever – which is sponsoring the event for the 12th successive year – setting the fundraising pace by matching the money raised by each employee who took part.
Jim Costello, of organiser the Rotary Club of North Wirral, said: “Many walkers set off as early as 8am, helped by the fantastic weather.”
