COUNCIL bosses proposed cuts to councillors’ allowances which could see them forfeit around £30,000 cash.
The new leader of St Helens Council, Labour’s Marie Rimmer, suggested a 4% cut in the payments members get for serving on the authority.
The executive board, committee chairmen, the mayor and his deputy and ordinary councillors receive an estimated £795,000 between them.
A 4% cut could equate to around £31,000, with Cllr Rimmer saying it was unacceptable for councillors to see bigger pay increases than local government workers.
Pay rises for council staff were around 1% last year, compared with a 6% rise for elected members.
Cllr Rimmer said: “It is totally unacceptable councillors receive a bigger increase than both employees and many working residents.
“I want St Helens to lead the way.”
