Campaigning widow Helen Newlove made Conservative peer

THE campaigning widow of a Cheshire man who was kicked to death by drunken louts will be made a Conservative peer, party sources confirmed last night.

Helen Newlove’s husband, Garry, was murdered in Warrington in August, 2007, by three youths.

Since then, she has campaigned tirelessly to try to rid UK streets of violent thugs.

Now Prime Minister David Cameron is going to give her a seat in the House of Lords.

Mrs Newlove joined Mr Cameron on the campaign trail during the election when he visited a youth club in Bolton in April.

Since her husband’s death, she has repeatedly called for better training for pub workers and a more responsible drinking culture in the UK. She is chairman of the National Licensed Trade Association, which she launched earlier this year.

The group is trying to stamp out binge drinking using campaigns and by educating and training bar staff and landlords.

Mrs Newlove was also named Cheshire Woman of the Year 2009.

Although no official announcement of her elevation to the House of Lords has been made, news of the peerage was posted on the micro-blogging website Twitter.

Mr Cameron’s former speech writer Samuel Coates, who is originally from Crosby, posted “Gary Newlove’s widow, Helen Newlove, is being made a Conservative peer” shortly after 5pm last night.
