Thousands turn out for Mersey Tunnel 10K road race

MORE than 2,000 people took part in this year’s Mersey Tunnel 10k, running from Liverpool to New Brighton in Wirral.

Merseytravel had closed off part of the Wallasey tunnel for the runners.

The event saw good crowds both at the start and the finish, who were able to cheer home the first man to cross the line, Stuart Stokes, from Sale Harriers, in a time of 32.29 minutes. He was closely followed by local runner Richard Burney, from Liverpool Harriers, and behind him Simon Mills, again from Sale Harriers.

The first woman to cross the line was Jenny Clague, from Liverpool Harriers, in a time of 36.17 minutes, followed less than two minutes later by Kirsty Longley, from Liverpool Pembroke Sefton, and Catherine Draper, from Liverpool Harriers, came in third.

Merseytravel and Mersey Tunnels supported the return of the race in 2006, which has since gone from strength to strength.

The race starts on Pall Mall, in Liverpool, and the route takes runners through Wallasey Tunnel and past Seacombe Ferry, finishing at New Brighton.
