A MYSTERY medal produced by the Liverpool Daily Post has been unearthed by a reader.
Helen Hazell was clearing her late father’s house when she came across the nine-carat gold trinket, which she believes may have been presented to her grandfather.
She said: “It was with my mum’s stuff.
“My mum and all her family came from Liverpool.
“She was born in 1932 and the hallmark dates it to 1938, so I cannot imagine it could have been hers.
“It is not engraved as an award.”
The inscription on the medal, which was made by Boodle & Dunthorpe, provides no clues.
Helen added: “My grandparents Beryl and Thomas Perkin lived in Wavertree and the West Derby area. He worked on the railway for years – all his life really.
“I suspect my mum got it when she cleared her dad’s house.”
Helen is hoping a Daily Post reader will be able to shed some light on her find.
She said: “I do not just want to dispose of it without knowing its history.
“Just going by the hallmark, I did some research about things of significance in that year and found mention of a gold medal having been produced for the launch of the Queen Mary, but the medallion makes no reference to that.”
