Cumbria shooting
A MEMORIAL service to the Liverpool-born victim of Derrick Bird celebrated the life of a much- loved grandfather, father and friend.
Former Sellafield worker Michael Pike, 64, originally from Garston, was shot and killed in the Cumbrian village of Seascale just yards from his home.
Fireman David Moore tried to save Mr Pike.
At the service yesterday, he said: “Seascale was and still is a stunned community.
“I have come here today to pay my respects.
“Unfortunately devastation and carnage has arrived in our village and this service is about coming to terms with that.
“This is a community in stunned silence.
“It has not come to terms with it yet – a week has disappeared in our lives. We have to mark the occasion and we must now try to move on.
“We are a strong, close-knit community and we will pull through this.”
Mr Moore also treated pub landlord Harry Berger, who was injured in Seascale when the gunman shot at him in his Range Rover while he waited by the bridge under the village railway station.
After comforting Mr Berger until medical help arrived, he went to the aid of Mr Pike and fellow victim Jane Robinson, but said: “Unfortunately it was too late, there was nothing we could do.”
Former shipbuilder Mr Pike, who lived with his wife Sheena and son Jason, 39, died on the pavement beside his bike after Bird targeted him on his daily cycle ride in Drigg Road along the village seafront.
