Students cannot get on Liverpool John Moores University degree courses because they are not from overseas

CITY students whose courses are being scrapped were refused alternative places because they are not foreign.

The Daily Post revealed how Liverpool John Moores University wants to axe three degrees – history and politics, politics and geography – from September.

The university insisted the proposal was based on demand and all 67 students affected would be offered alternative places.

But last night it emerged students face losing on out on alternative courses because they are only accepting applicants from higher fee-paying overseas students .

Liverpool John Moores University stressed it had a government-imposed cap on the number of UK and EU students it could accept and would be hit financially with a £3,700 fine per extra student if it exceeded them.

Students from outside the EU are subject to a different funding package and the two have to be treated separately.

But last night, students and education campaigners attacked the system, which it said was “penalising homegrown” applicants.

Those being refused a place included 17-year-old Sean Zee, from Birkdale.

He was due to study a BA honours politics degree in September but received a letter confirming it was being cancelled.
