Sam Beilin
A WELL-KNOWN Liverpool property developer has been declared bankrupt with debts of around £1m, the Daily Post can reveal.
Sam Beilin, 48, former secretary of TRB Estates, was made bankrupt by Liverpool County Court after accountant Melville Morris filed a petition against him. Mr Beilin – former chairman of Jewish youth centre Harold House and a fundraiser for the NSPCC – is one of the most high-profile victims of the property crash in Liverpool.
Prior to the bankruptcy application, Mr Morris had offices on the same floor of Muskers Building, in Stanley Street, where Mr Beilin’s companies are based.
William Kearns, 48, former director of TRB estates, was also made bankrupt after a petition from Mr Morris, though it is not known how much his debts were.
The pair owed money to Haslebrow Finance Ltd, a small finance company owned and run by Mr Morris.
Last night Mr Beilin, Mr Kearns, and Mr Morris declined to comment.
“This is a significant bankruptcy. Sam Beilin is a BTO – a Big Time Operator,” said one city source.
Another well-placed source told the Daily Post: “He had debts of just over £1m.”
The little known Haslebrow Finance, still based in Stanley Street, is now at a different address.
A Daily Post investigation has established that the company started proceedings against the pair in April, 2009, but it is not known how much they owed Haslebrow.
The bankruptcy of Mr Kearns was ordered by the court in February this year, and that of Mr Beilin was ordered in April. The pair’s financial woes appear to have started some time before as they resigned their positions as officers for TRB estates in January, 2009.
The pair also ran Honey Properties and Euston Square Properties together, but in the past couple of years resigned as either director or secretary of those, too.
Insolvency practitioner Joanne Wright, of Begbies Traynor, has recently been appointed trustee in both cases and will have to decide how assets are divided up for creditors.
