Chris Boardman
AN OLYMPIC Gold Medal winning cyclist has loaned several historical items from his career to the new Museum of Liverpool.
Chris Boardman MBE, who is from Hoylake, presented the new museum, which will be opened in 2011, three items.
He has handed over his famous self-modified Lotus Sport super bike, which he said ‘is as extreme as a bicycle gets’ as well as, his first Tour de France yellow jersey from 1994 and the piece of the Manchester Velodrome that he crossed as he broke the world hour record for the second time in 1996.
The three-time world hour record breaker said: “This is a brilliant opportunity to give this stuff a home.”
“The bicycle is the last of its kind and is a very curious item so it’s great for people to see such a curious piece of sporting history.
All of the items will be part of a gallery in the museum that celebrates Liverpool’s creativity and sporting achievement, alongside boxer John Conteh’s gloves, boots and WBC title belt.
Chris said he owns many more pieces of memorabilia.
He said: “I have a suitcase full of yellow jerseys, and there are medals all around the house.
“I’m still not comfortable with seeing my name on bikes and my face on posters.”
“I tend not to think about my past success.
“However, I do use my experience when coaching others and making bikes.”
When Chris was younger his favourite museum in Liverpool used to be the Merseyside Maritime Museum.
